Kurzfassung/Abstract
Language learning is often reduced to a purely cognitive act; yet, it really encompasses an emotional, relational, and meaning making process embedded in social and spatial environments (Sambanis & Ludwig, 2025). In other words, the physical space is not a passive backdrop but actively co-creates the learning experience of students. It can foster safety, openness, and motivation – or trigger pressure, anxiety, and withdrawal (Mercer & Gregersen, 2020; Strong-Wilson & Ellis, 2007). This chapter therefore introduces key spatial foundations for creating a positive(language) learning environment. It outlines how divergent factors, such as acoustics, scents, exposure to light and interior design elements (e.g., poster boards) rooted in diverse learning settings and seating arrangements jointly provide the conditions for meaningful and emotionally supportive language learning. In parallel, it highlights exemplary formats (e.g., outdoor brainstorming walks, library writing seminars, and TedTalk conferences) that foster learner agency. Combined, the chapter aims to encourage educators to not only develop a heightened awareness of the spatial dynamics that support positive, sustainable language learning, but also to start incorporating respective elements and diverse settings more intentionally into the design of classroom activities.
