Kurzfassung/Abstract

Revenge following interpersonal transgressions may be driven by distinct psychological motives and manifest in different revenge-related decisions. This preregistration outlines a vignette-based survey of approximately 500 German adults investigating associations between revenge motives, personality traits, and revenge decisions. First, an exploratory factor analysis will be used to identify the underlying structure of a newly developed 30-item Revenge Motive Scale. Subsequently, multiple regression analyses will examine associations between the identified revenge motive dimensions, narcissistic need for power, and victim justice sensitivity. Further analyses will investigate how revenge motives relate to different revenge decisions, including personal, excessive, proportional, and third-party revenge, as well as willingness to forgo punishment.
