Raum - vernachlässigte Kategorie der Geschichtskultur

Kurzfassung/Abstract

Over the last decades, in addition to ›time‹, ›space‹ has been a center of focus in research in cultural sciences. With that in mind, the present article tries to explore, in how far ›space‹ can be used in a theoretical and conceptual way in order to deepen the understanding of historical culture.
Impulses for that kind of development of theory are drawn from analyses (1) of concepts of space, which emerged during the spatial turn and (2) of the understanding of space in national concepts of memorial sites. On that basis, concepts of space, which seem to be of importance for a theoretical deepening of ›historical culture‹, are put forward. They represent material understandings of space on the one hand, and imaginative-symbolic ones on the other. In a relevant field of practice, the concepts of space are tested for sustainability to support activities of historical culture in, with and by history.
