Kurzfassung/Abstract
Absolute pitch (AP), defined as the ability to label or produce individual pitches without the use of an external reference, has been a topic for musicological and psychological research for more than one hundred years. While in the early 19th century, it was believed to be an inherited talent and associated with features of musical genius, later research demystified the phenomenon and demonstrated the importance of learning for the development of AP. Even today, the interplay of genes and learning is one of the issues controversially debated in the AP literature, a debate which has been stimulated by modern neuroscientific methods. Besides developmental issues, AP has been studied as an example of an extraordinary memory function. In this context, possible links between AP and different aspects of language have been discussed. The symposium delivers insight into the current state of the debate in AP research. The paper by Kathrin Schlemmer addresses the issue of AP development and asks whether the learning process ultimately leading to the development of AP is influenced by individual differences in cognitive style. The papers by Mathias Oechslin and Diana Deutsch et al. deal with proposed links between AP and language. Oechslin presents functional MRI research adressing a direkt link between pitch processing and propositional speech perception. Deutsch and collegues have conducted comparative studies of AP among different ethnicities and will give an overview of their current work on the links between native language, especially tone languages, and AP development.
