Kurzfassung/Abstract

Journalism continues to play an important role with regards to reporting wars and conflicts around the world. The extent of involvement afforded by journalists while they cover conflicts has been the cause of an intense scholarly debate over the years. Utilizing a typology that divides conflicts on the basis of their intensity, this paper offers a systematic approach towards reporting by suggesting the practice of selected journalistic concepts in different conflict stages. Based on their normative approach and focus on gradual attitudinal change, the concepts of peace journalism and conflict-sensitive journalism are considered appropriate for their application during large-scale conflicts, i.e., limited wars and wars. The concepts of public journalism, constructive journalism, and citizen journalism are recommended for practice during less intense or moderate conflicts, i.e., disputes, non-violent crisis, and violent crisis, as they are audience-centered in their approach and can promote democratic practices in the society. By means of this systematic approach, a wholistic reporting of conflicts is expected along with a better understanding of the extent of utility of selected journalistic concepts.
