Kurzfassung/Abstract
Modern digital platforms not only ensure fast-paced communication, but also give voice to the marginalized and neglected segments of society, thereby enabling them to unite as digital counter-publics. Although scholarly efforts have been made to understand the use of digital platforms by counter-publics in different socio-political settings, how digital counter-publics in antagonistic societies manifest themselves is scarcely addressed. Using Afghanistan and Lebanon as examples of antagonistic societies, this research investigates the discursive characteristics of digital counter-publics in these countries. By analyzing (1) Twitter use, (2) the framing of news on selected alternative digital media platforms from Afghanistan and Lebanon, and (3) through semi-structured interviews with journalists from these platforms, it was concluded that counter-publics in both countries used online media to express dissent, to disapprove the powers that be, and to advocate socio-political change.
