Kurzfassung/Abstract
This paper aims at critically questioning some of the practical work and underlying ideas of classical music projects with refugee children. Written from the perspective of a reflective practitioner, issues of cultural hegemony, social reproduction and power come to the fore when looking at central ideas and structures of these music projects. The question is asked, if the values that are embedded in orchestral playing and classical instrumental lessons might counter the intention of enabling a better integration and of achieving more equity and social justice for this vulnerable population. Possibly, messages of cultural dominance are intermingled with the attempt to offer relief and joy through music. Concepts of culturally responsive teaching in music are touched on as a possible way out.
