Kurzfassung/Abstract

The present study tests the reasoned action approach by investigating the relationship between justice cognitions and voluntary engagement intentions as well as manifest volunteering behavior. Building on Lerner’s and Montada’s justice motive theory, indignation about non-engagement is proposed to mediate this relationship, thus expanding the reasoned action approach by an emotional component. The outcome of voluntary engagement intention is differentiated according to established work psychological categories of activity, which are rooted in the differentiation of person- vs. object-related work objectives. The empirical results of this study account for the validity and predictive relevance of a specific justice motive, besides perceived behavioral control and perceived norm. Structural equation modeling substantiates the suggested hierarchy-of-effects model. Indignation about non-engagement partially mediates the relationship between the justice motive as well as perceived norm and the intention to volunteer. Further results and practical as well as scientific implications will be discussed.
